The Scientific Revolution
The Scientific Revolution is a name that describes a time of changing ideas and the change of how people thought. Before the 1500’s, people turned to the ancient Greek and Romans to explain the laws of nature. Then, after the Renaissance, people started to get more curious and they wanted to find things out for themselves. Another reason for the scientific revolution was that people could look around and see that the ancient descriptions of reasons why nature is the way it is did not match up to what they saw in the real world. (1)
There are a few main scientists that pushed the scientific revolution forward. These scientists are Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, and Sir Francis Bacon. Before Copernicus, there was a widespread belief that the earth is the center of the universe because of an ancient Greek geocentric model of the universe that showed the other planets and stars revolving around the earth. (5) Later on, Galileo continued Copernicus’ heliocentric model of the universe. This model showed the sun in the center. Galileo also managed to prove that this model was correct. However, he had to take his work back because if he didn’t he would have been executed. (2)
Isaac Newton also used the heliocentric model of the universe, and he proved that gravity is the force that keeps the planets moving around the sun. He did this by using mathematics, and he also showed that gravity is the force on earth that keeps everything on the ground as well.
Another main scientist of the scientific revolution was Sir Francis Bacon. He was the person to develop what we now call the scientific method. (3) The scientific method is a set of specific steps that aid scientists in their attempts to find out why things are the way they are. These steps include: state the problem or question, gather information, form a hypothesis, experiment to test the hypothesis, record and analyze data, state a conclusion, and repeat the steps (2).
Along with the scientific method, another result of the scientific revolution was the enlightenment. The enlightenment was when people started to accept the new ideas of the Scientific Revolution and tried to figure out what the best type of government was (2). People started to question their own government because they wanted to find a type that could benefit them more.
The scientific revolution was a time of new discoveries and ideas. It revolutionized the world and the people in it.
